Hrant Dink, writer and editor-in-chied of Agos newspaper, was shot on 19 January 2007 in Istanbul, in the middle of the street in front of the newspaper he founded. The assassination was prepared around a systematic campaign of smears and provocation; and he had been condemned with claims that he had written and spoken words that he never had, and never would have. He was threatened, forced into a corner, and finally, they shot him. There was a huge uproar in the aftermath of the murder, more than 100 thousand people took part in Hrant’s funeral, shouting the slogan, “We are all Hrant, we are all Armenians.” It was quite evident that numerous government officials had been guilty of neglect or mistakes during the process of the planning and execution of the murder; some had turned a blind eye although they knew what was about to ensue, while others had personally taken part in the process. Though the murderer and the few nationalist lumpens around him were caught within a few days and thoroughly shocking facts were revealed during the inquiry; in one way or the other, all the government officials involved in the incident were protected and harboured, and no permission was granted for any of them to be investigated, or put to trial. As if this was not enough, the treatment –or rather, hospitality- the murderers received in the hands of the police and the court was terribly disheartening for those who were seeking justice. On the first anniversary of Hrant’s death, I brought together all the information related to these outrageous developments and approaching those actors whose participation in such a project I thought would be meaningful, I asked if they would become the narrators of the film. “For Hrant, with pleasure,” was their response and they rushed to support me. For the second year, I repeated the same process with a different set of people. These two films have now been combined to form a single one. The first film had been placed on the NTVMSNBC web site and was viewed by more than 30 thousand people. The latest version, which comprises the events of the past two years, has been screened many times both domestically and internationally, and remains to this day the only resource on the subject.
A minor point which carries no significance in relation to the scandal of the assassination and miscarriage of justice: I have attempted, especially in the second film, to introduce original visual elements. For quite some time, the film was available on gecetreni.com, but it was in Flash Video and low definition. You can now view it in much higher definition.
